BLU operations in the area have met with horrific resistance from RED of late. Steps, as they say, had to be taken. When the intelligence reports last filched from under RED's nose indicated the RED team had concentrated vast quantities of infrastructure in a single location accessible by rail from an old, forgotten BLU listening post...

Well. Who are the BLU field operatives to ignore an opportunity dropped in their lap?

Time for some serious mayhem.

Since when do hostile forces obey a magical voice coming out of nowhere?

...oh right.

In any case, Alyx is already running along the hillside at the edge of the basin, trying to spot the incoming BLUs without making herself too visible in the process.

There's a stocky fellow in overalls, a blue shirt, and a helmet banging away on a circular metallic affair not too far from the entrances to the BLU listening post, along with any of the other BLUs that may be headed for the hillside while the cart rolls along the tracks.

Alyx doesn't know what that device is, but it behooves her to make sure it doesn't get finished. She drops to a low crouch behind a croup of rocks and inches toward his position.

The Engineer doesn't notice; he's beating the snot out of that thing with his wrench. Weird thing is, it looks like it's actually responding positively- metal parts and other bits unfolding at a faster rate with each whack.

Once she gets close, she peers over the top of the rocks just far enough to get a bead on the man's back with her scattergun.

It's no sniper rifle, but at this range, it'll do.

"AUGH!" shouts the Engineer, staggering as the scattergun ammo tears into his upper back. He twists before the blood can really get under way and comes up with a pistol in his yellow-gloved hand. "Start prayin', boy!" he shouts, and opens fire in Alyx's direction.

Alyx may not have Reliable Excavation and Demolition training, but she knows a thing or two about dodging fire in close-quarters combat. She ducks back down behind the rocks, rolls out into the open and comes up firing her own pistol as rapidly as the firing mechanism will allow.

"Why don't you just get along before one of you gets hurt?" snaps the Engineer, falling back himself to buy time. That pistol's not going to do him much good against someone who moves as fast as a Scout, not unless he can put a lot more lead in the air- that, or get out his own shotgun. Dammit, he should've built a sentrygun first and then worried about the teleporters!

The pistol's clip runs out all too quickly; Alyx pulls out the scattergun again.

...she feels like she should have something witty to say at this juncture, but it's just not coming. Oh well.

BLAM.

"Medic!" yells the Engineer- and keeps firing; his pistol isn't gonna run dry any time soon. He's been playing with it in his off hours. Now it's just a matter of staying out of the scattergun's cone of fire until he either gets a medic or manages to bolt for a first-aid kit; that thing's gonna leave a mark...

Damn, how many rounds does his gun have?? As she bobs and weaves, Alyx curses herself for leaving her machine pistol behind. Screw being conspicuous, it would be damned useful...

"Son! I'm gonna blow that dumb look right off your stupid face!"

... well, he's wearing goggles and Alyx is moving awfully fast. On the other hand, he's a reasonably good shot now that he's sufficiently motivated, and boy howdy does that trigger respond nice and quick-like.

The bullet embeds itself in her side just below the ribcage; Alyx grimaces, but stays upright. "That's 'lady' to you," she growls, just before the Engineer gets a facefull of scattergun.

Mia's gotten some briefing on effective Pyro methods. She is by no means a pro, but she is keeping some things in mind.

This includes ducking behind corners big enough to accommodate her and her annoyingly long weapon so the end doesn't stick out.

So Alyx doesn't see her. We think.

We could be wrong, and when we're wrong, there's fire.

Did Alyx see movement in the corner of her eye just now?

She whirls to face it, scattergun at the ready. For several seconds, she's perfectly still.

Then she shakes her head and keeps moving.

Tense, tense stillness.

And when Mia is sure she is safe, she slowly presses onward, towards a promising looking ledge for an ambush.

Looks like there's going to be a trek of open space, so Mia's preparing herself to run.

Forgetting how long her weapon is for the moment.

This time? Alyx notices.

She aims her scattergun at the shadows just behind the silhouetted end of the flamethrower, and fires.

The angle was off for a direct hit, but Mia did get grazed. She goes back the way she came and comes around to the other end, facing the same trek as before but with more distance between her and Alyx.

Ah, there's the RED Scout.

Mia makes a run for it, moving in to fire at Alyx.

Ohhh crap.

Alyx breaks into a dead run, turning back over her shoulder to fire in the pyro's general direction.

Crud, no sense in wasting ammunition on a retreat she can't catch up to. Didn't look like she hit, either.

But on the other hand, it looks like she's managed to avoid this shot (mostly) and make most of her trek. She goes back to her original plan of reaching the ledge in order to set up for an ambush.

Unfortunately, Alyx is heading for the next ledge over. And as soon as she gets there, she swaps the scattergun for the pistol and starts firing on the approaching pyro, taking more care in her aim this time.

Mia keeps on the move, aiming to circle around Alyx with the fire.

But Alyx is a better shot and faster...

When you're wielding a flamethrower, you don't need to be fast or accurate. As evidenced by the fact that the back of Alyx's shirt has just caught on fire.

"FUCK!" she screams, diving for the ground and rolling in hopes of smothering the flames.

If Mia were the type to laugh evilly, this would be the perfect time. But she's not and she's hit her target.

Hmm, no water, no Medics...better to jump down and finish the job.

"Sorry about this; it's honestly nothing personal," she mumbles through her mask.

Though all Alyx might here is burning.

And that's all she feels, too. Burning, spreading all over her body...

And then, suddenly, it stops.

Hesitantly, Alyx opens one eye, then the other. She's back in the locker room where she started. Her clothes are intact, and there's no sign of any burns on her body.

"...the fuck?"

She recovers quickly, however. Regardless of how, she's alive and uninjured. And once she's resupplied, that psycho with the flamethrower is going down.
