It seems like a perfectly sensible sort of place: pale blue walls, tile flooring, fluorescent lighting high overhead, lockers. There's even a pinup calendar.

But a close look shows the equipment locker to contain more ammunition than some Third World countries use in a month, and the same personal locker that has the small flowered purse in it has a note about asbestos stuck to the door, and the air has that faint tang of antiseptic scrub that only really happens when vast quantities of the stuff are used to wipe out every other smell possible. And a peek out the big, garage-like door reveals what looks not unlike the inside of a barn, save for the weathered Builders League United logo on the wall...

[OOC: This is the BLU side's initial post for the Team Fortress 2 plot. If you want to play on RED, stop by [livejournal.com profile] battin1000. Orientation takes place here and when people get in on both sides we'll have the actual war post. Consult the 2fort Team Fortress 2 wiki page to get an idea of the grounds we'll be playing on!]

"Last time I checked it sure as heck was," says the Engineer. "Might be one of the isolated patches, but it's still Earth anyway."

"Oh, we're just a harmless ol' firm that does a heck of a lot of infrastructure work in places other companies won't go, and if you believe that then I've got a couple of salt caves on McIlhenny Island to sell you." He flashes a crooked little smile. "We work in war zones, is the point. And, well, sometimes we're doing the work, and sometimes we're doing the war. Today we're doing the war. We've got about fifteen minutes before the folks over at Reliable Excavation Demolition HQ start comin' over the bridge looking to relieve us of our locally gathered, correlated, and analyzed intelligence data."

Garak believes no such thing; in fact, he believes very little that is presented to him at any given time - truth is rarely one-sided, and very often easily adjusted to fit one's own perception of things.

"Ah." It is short, punctuated, perhaps even precise. One blink of an eye later, Garak has made up his mind. "If I can be of assistance in any way, please don't hesitate to ask."

"Much obliged," says the Engineer, tugging once at the brim of his hard hat. "See, the fact of the matter is that most everyone here on both BLU and RED's payroll alike've been at this job long enough that once the day's fighting starts, anybody not wearing team colors not only counts as fair game, but first game. Whether or not you actually want to lend a hand, if you wanna make it to the end of the day alive, you're best off putting on one of our uniforms and joining in. That way only half the people here'll be shooting at you."

He indicates the equipment lockers.

"We've got spares for pretty much everyone right now, so take your pick- but the Medic's as cranky as a coon hound with a porcupine quill in his nose by nature, so I don't suggest using his spare unless you're already familiar with the medigun he uses."

Garak listens, head cocked to the side, blue eyes taking everything in. At the very end of the briefing, his chin juts up and out - a fraction, really, not much more.

"I can live with those odds. Which is to say I won't be going near the doctor's equipment. They do have a tendency to be, shall we say, territorial, even where I come from."

He doesn't much like the thought of a 'medigun', either.

"Yeah, and if we both make it to the end of the day in one piece I might even ask you where that is," says the Engineer. "Right now, though, let's just park that question and pick it up later. We've got... let's see. Still got a couple of Scout scatterguns, a sniper rifle, a spare minigun- couple of shotguns, of course, we keep a good stock of those- oh, hey, our Pyro's using the backburner today, his usual flamethrower's here instead- so's the rocket launcher..."
